The Design Story

This Un Poco Scarf design is an homage to one of Australia´s most famous animals. The Koala is a marsupial which despite being an Australian National Symbol, lives high up on eucalyptus trees only in Eastern and South Eastern regions of the country. To help support their tree clinging lifestyle, they have strong cartilage at the end of their curved spine which helps them to wedge comfortably between the forks of the trees.

The name “ Koala” is thought to be derived from Aboriginal language meaning “ No drink” as Koalas were first thought not to drink water and instead obtain the moisture from the eucalyptus tree leaves, of which they can eat up to to 1 kilograms a day. It is now known that they do drink water, especially during heatwaves. As the eucalyptus trees are low in nutrients, Koalas feel the need to sleep a lot, sometimes up to 18 hours a day. Sadly, deforestation and bushfires threaten the Koala population in Australia and have pushed population numbers down.
